The Birdwatcher
by Anne Faith Nicholls
Oil and acrylic on canvas, 50" wide x  60" tall

The Bird Watcher is a work painted with Nicholls' unique method of layering oil and acrylic mediums to create a both classical and graphic affect. The watcher is painted in a classical oil technique, a beauty on the rocks, flush with life. While in contrast, the loons that flock towards her are painted in flat black. This is symbolic of the deadly oil that coats their feathers, for in the background one can spot an ominous oil tanker bobbing in dark seas.  This piece was produced in direct response to the increase of oil spills due to off-shore-drilling along the Western Coast of the United States, and in solidarity with those who fight for our environment.
